Drift Protocol, which was hacked for $286M, has released its preliminary incident analysis, and ... it’s ALARMING. The attack appears to have begun around six months ago with a highly sophisticated, in-person social engineering campaign. They met at crypto conferences and the attackers had well prepared online profiles. They posed as a quantitative trading firm and built a partnership with the Drift team. During the integration process, they compromised Drift’s co‑signers by sharing a malicious repository and their (fake) wallet application. This is deeply concerning, and should serve as a serious wake‑up call for the entire industry. As presumed, it’s attributed to a North Korea group. Full prelimary report below.

Drift's hacking incident starkly brings a Korean spy thriller into reality. This Drift hack is truly a textbook example of social engineering… True spy infiltration warfare It lay dormant for six months before launching the attack… The core verifier of Drift met the counterpart face‑to‑face at a crypto conference in the fall of 2025 (probably Token2049 in Singapore or KBW). The counterpart approached Drift as a professional quantitative institution, wanting to deploy a strategy on the platform; note that they did not have a North‑South Korean appearance, but truly possessed deep quantitative expertise, engaging in months of “substantial” technical progress with the Drift team. Moreover, to gain trust, the attackers actually deposited $1 million (the saying “you can’t catch the wolf without a child” – i.e., they were willing to risk big money) to run the strategy, and then met again with Drift team members in February–March 2026. Thus, the cooperation lasted six months—from the initial face‑to‑face meeting, to online discussions, business advancement, technical integration, moving the business onto track, voluntarily depositing $1 million, and meeting offline again… If it were you, and your “partner” suddenly said, “Hey, I’ve developed a new strategy vault, want to try it? Would you blindly download it to test?” Faced with this level of infiltration and social engineering—how many people can resist? Through such technical exchanges and real‑business communication they earned trust, then poured real money—and launched the attack—resembling a scene from a Korean espionage movie. Later, security experts traced the fund flow and identified a DPRK (North Korean) hacking organization. Note: although it’s called a North Korean hacking group, the people who contacted us (the BD side) were not North Koreans… (scary, right?) They were intermediaries controlled by the North Korean organization. A North Korean hacking organization is an organization, not a group defined by nationality. stay safe trust but verify

@DriftProtocol I’m sorry but if you can lose 250 million because 2 people clicked a link the responsibility falls on drift. I’m a Brokie and even my cold storage wallets are isolated. The fault is poor security practices.

🚨 The Drift protocol publishes the results of the investigation into the $285 million theft. The attack appears to be a long‑term infiltration operation lasting about six months. Since fall 2025, the attackers have posed as a quantitative trading firm, continuously contacting members of the Drift team at several international cryptocurrency conferences and compromising devices via code repository links and the TestFlight application. Drift indicates that this operation could be linked to the North Korean hacker group behind the Radiant Capital theft in 2024.

🚨 6 months of preparation. Repeated face‑to‑face meetings. Capital over $1 million. That’s what the attacker did before successfully compromising the Drift Protocol. It wasn’t just a technical exploit, but a highly planned intelligence operation; they built trust slowly, professionally, and patiently until they could infiltrate from within. What key lessons must the whole team, founders, and crypto‑ecosystem participants learn to avoid becoming the next victim? Uncle summarizes it in this article:

🚨 Summary of the Drift Protocol exploit (April 1, 2026): ➡️ North Korean hackers (group UNC4736, same as Radiant Capital) spent 6 months conducting social engineering: they impersonated a trading firm, attended conferences, built relationships on Telegram, deposited over $1M and sent cloned repositories plus malicious TestFlight app (exploiting a VSCode vulnerability). ➡️ Protocol frozen, compromised wallets removed, Mandiant investigating. ➡️ I will explain everything in detail in my next Live, Sunday at 21:00. Stay tuned!
