This week saw one of the most significant crypto security incidents of 2026 — and one that underscores how quickly risks can materialise in decentralised finance. Drift Protocol, a major decentralised perpetual futures exchange on Solana, was exploited for approximately $286 million after attackers gained access to administrative controls. Within a short period, funds were drained from multiple vaults, rapidly converted into stablecoins, and then bridged across to other blockchains. Analysis from @elliptic suggests the behaviour is consistent with previous attacks linked to North Korean state-backed actors, including the use of pre-funded wallets, staged transactions, and fast cross-chain laundering. So what actually happened here? The attacker is believed to have compromised administrator private keys, giving them privileged access to withdraw funds and modify key settings. Rather than exploiting a smart contract bug, this was an attack on control infrastructure — a critical distinction. Once inside, the attacker systematically drained multiple vaults and quickly swapped assets into USDC before moving funds from Solana to Ethereum, where they were further converted into ETH. There are a few important takeaways: 1. Attacks like this are often premeditated. In this case, the wallet had been set up days in advance and even tested before the exploit. 2. Speed matters. Funds were moved, swapped, and bridged within hours, making real-time monitoring essential. 3. And importantly, this is increasingly a cross-chain problem. Activity doesn’t stay on one network, which makes tracking and response more complex. Incidents like this highlight how the risk landscape in crypto is evolving — not just in scale, but in sophistication. Understanding how these attacks work is becoming just as important as understanding the technology itself.
